Artist Maiko Saleff Biography – Water is an important element in my art work. I use water to let colors flow freely into the canvas.
In 1995, I moved from Japan to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to study Theater Scenic Design at Temple University. After graduating with B.A. from Temple University, I worked as a scenic artist on stage sets, backdrops, dioramas and murals for several different scenic studios and theaters in the Philadelphia regions, such as Quinlan Scenic Studios, Sysko Scenic Studios, Artist At Work, University of Arts, 1812 Productions, Lantern Theater and Arden Theater.
Since residing in the southern Delaware, I have been producing my own paintings for sale at the popular Cultured Pearl the Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I grew up in Katsuura, another small beach town in the east of Japan. Living so close to the beautiful beaches lets me feel as I am in my second hometown. My daughter Yuhki and I have been very fortunate Delaware residents since 2006.
My artwork comes from my Japanese origin, culture and tradition. Each art piece that I create gives me a sense of comfort. I hope that you can feel the same from my work as well.
